This species is found in China, Laos, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat consists of subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Did you know?

In former times, this bird was often included with the dark-backed sibia in Heterophasia melanoleuca. Together with most other sibias, it is sometimes separated into the genus Malacias.
