Malayan Banded Pitta

Overview

The Malayan banded pitta (Hydrornis irena) is a colourful species of bird in the family Pittidae, also known as the blue-tailed or Irene's pitta. It is distinct from the Bornean and Javan banded pittas, having been separated based on morphological, behavioural, and vocal differences.

Identification

• Black head featuring a yellow/orange streak above the eye.
• Orange-red nape and lemon-yellow throat.
• Chest barred with orange and dark blue, with a blue belly.
• Brown back and blue tail.

Habitat

Native to tropical south-eastern Asia, its range encompasses Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra. It primarily inhabits primary lowland evergreen forests, including swamp forests, up to altitudes of 1,500 m, and occasionally occurs in secondary forest.

Diet

Its diet consists mainly of insects and fruits.
