Blue-naped Pitta

Overview

The blue-naped pitta (Hydrornis nipalensis) is a brightly colored bird in the family Pittidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Blue and green plumage above with reddish-yellow coloring below.
• Bright blue nape and hindneck in males, with a reddish-brown hindcrown and green hindneck in females.
• Brown tail with a bit of green.
• Call is a double whistle heard at dawn and dusk.

Habitat

Found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, including bamboo jungles.

Diet

Its diet consists of ground insects and other small animals.
