Pale-blue Monarch

Overview

The pale-blue monarch (Hypothymis puella) is a small passerine bird in the family Monarchidae that is endemic to eastern Indonesia. It was originally classified as a subspecies of the widespread black-naped monarch but was split by the IOC in 2013 to describe a new species, though some authorities have not yet adopted this change.

Identification

• Sits very upright while perched prominently, resembling a shrike.
• Possesses short legs.

Habitat

This species inhabits forest environments and is found in eastern Indonesia. Two subspecies are recognized: H. p. puella is located on Sulawesi and adjacent islands, while H. p. blasii is found in the Banggai archipelago.

Diet

The pale-blue monarch is insectivorous and frequently hunts by flycatching.

Did you know?

The bird was only recognized as a distinct species by the IOC in 2013, previously having been treated as a subspecies of the widespread black-naped monarch.
