Mauritius Bulbul

Overview

The Mauritius bulbul, or Hypsipetes olivaceus, is a songbird endemic to the island of Mauritius. It is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Up to 24 cm in length with generally greyish plumage contrasted by a black crest.
• Bright yellow-brown eyes, pink legs, and an orange to yellow-hued bill.
• Juveniles have pale brown plumage and a blackish bill.

Habitat

This species is endemic to Mauritius and has historically relied on forest habitats, though these have been significantly replaced by tea plantations and invasive weeds.

Diet

The diet consists of insects, seeds, and fruits, with a particular preference for the ripe berries of the non-native Spanish Flag.
