Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush

Overview

The rufous-chinned laughingthrush (Ianthocincla rufogularis) is a bird species in the family Leiothrichidae. It ranges across the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent and some parts of Southeast Asia.

Identification

• Mid-sized body with greyish underparts and brown upperparts featuring scale-like feather patterning.
• Black cap and a band on the brown tail.
• Distinctive pale buff loreal patch and a broad dark moustachial stripe bordering the rufous chin and ear coverts.

Habitat

Found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, occurring along the Himalayas.

Did you know?

Described by the English ornithologist and bird artist John Gould in 1835, the species was returned to its original genus Ianthocincla in 2018 after previously being placed in Garrulax.
