Overview

Sykes's warbler (Iduna rama) is a small Old World warbler that was formerly classified as a subspecies of the booted warbler but is now recognised as a full species. It is found across a wide range in Asia, with populations migrating to the Indian subcontinent during the winter.

Habitat

This species inhabits open country featuring bushes and other tall vegetation. Its breeding range extends from northeast Arabia to Turkestan, western China, and Afghanistan, while many populations migrate south to Sri Lanka in winter.

Diet

Like most warblers, Sykes's warbler is insectivorous, feeding on insects.

Did you know?

The species is named after Colonel William Henry Sykes, who served in the British military in India, while its specific epithet, rama, refers to the Hindu god Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu.
