Overview

The long-tailed glossy starling (Lamprotornis caudatus) is a common passerine in the starling family that acts as a resident breeder across tropical Africa. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Length of 54 cm with a distinctively long 33 cm purple tail.
• Metallic green upperparts and violet underparts.
• Black face with a yellow eye.
• Harsh, grating call that is gregarious and noisy.

Habitat

Found in open woodland and cultivation areas. Its range extends from Senegal eastward to Sudan.

Diet

An omnivore that feeds on fruit and insects.
