Crimson-breasted Shrike

Overview

The crimson-breasted shrike (Laniarius atrococcineus), also known as the crimson-breasted gonolek or boubou, is a non-migratory bird native to southern Africa. It is classified as a Least Concern species by the IUCN.

Identification

• Black upper parts, including the wings and tail, featuring a broad white bar on the wings.
• Vivid scarlet underparts, with a rare yellow-breasted form occasionally observed.
• Sexes are indistinguishable, while young birds appear mottled and barred in buff-brown with a pale bill.
• Penetrating whistles are often the first sign of its presence.

Habitat

Found in a broad swathe from southern Angola to the Free State and Northern Cape in South Africa, the species prefers drier thornbush areas, thickets, and riparian scrub. It is non-migratory but makes small seasonal shifts towards lower altitudes during cold periods.

Did you know?

The name 'gonolek' is supposedly imitative of the bird's call. In South West Africa, its black and red colours reminded Germans of their national flag, leading to its nickname the Reichsvogel or 'Empire bird'.
