Overview

The mountain sooty boubou, also known as the western boubou or mountain boubou, is a species of bird in the family Malaconotidae. It comprises two recognized subspecies: the nominate Laniarius poensis, which is endemic to Bioko, and L. p. camerunensis, found on the African mainland.

Habitat

The species is found in montane forests along the Cameroon line, ranging from Bioko in Equatorial Guinea north to Mount Oku in Cameroon and the Obudu Plateau in Nigeria. It usually inhabits elevations above 600 m, though on the windward slopes of Mount Cameroon it can occur as low as 520 m above sea level.

The bird was formerly considered conspecific with the Albertine, Willard's, and Fülleborn's sooty boubous, reflecting a complex taxonomic history before being recognised as a distinct species.
