East Coast Boubou

Overview

The East Coast boubou, also known as the Zanzibar boubou (Laniarius sublacteus), is a species of bird in the family Malaconotidae. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Vestigial or absent white wing stripe.
• Outer tail feathers may feature white tips.
• Juveniles lack barring on the underside.
• An all-black morph occurs in specific regions.

Habitat

This bird inhabits moist savanna environments. Its range extends from southeast Somalia to northeast Tanzania, including Zanzibar island.

An entirely black morph of the species is found in the area around the lower Jubba and Tana Rivers and on the Lamu Archipelago.
