Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Its range extends across the eastern Himalayas, southern China and Indochina.

The yellow-cheeked tit was formerly placed in the genus Parus before a 2013 molecular phylogenetic analysis relocated it to Machlolophus after confirming that these birds formed a distinct clade.
