Yellow-throated Longclaw

Overview

The yellow-throated longclaw (Macronyx croceus) is a species of bird in the family Motacillidae. Although it shares no recent common ancestor with meadowlarks, it exhibits striking convergent evolution in both coloration and behaviour with those North American birds. The species is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Yellow underparts with a distinct black 'bib' on the upper chest.
• Distinguishable from the closely related pangani longclaw by the presence of yellow under tail-coverts.
• Lacks the orange throat characteristic of the pangani longclaw.

Habitat

This species is found across a wide range of African countries, including Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, and South Africa. Its natural habitats consist of dry savanna, subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, and sandy shores.
