Lovely Fairywren

Overview

The lovely fairywren, also known as the lovely wren, is a species of bird in the Australasian wren family, Maluridae. It is endemic to northeastern Australia, where it inhabits subtropical or tropical dry and moist lowland forests.

Identification

• Males in breeding plumage display brilliant iridescent blue ear coverts, crown and upper back, contrasting with a black throat and nape, chestnut shoulders, and a white-tipped blue tail.
• Females have smoky blue upperparts and tail with turquoise ear tufts, dark grey wings, and white underparts.
• Both sexes possess black bills, brown eyes, and flesh-grey feet, while immature birds resemble females but have brown bills.
• The species exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, with males adopting highly visible breeding plumage.

Habitat

This species is endemic to northeastern Australia. Its natural habitats consist of subtropical or tropical dry forest and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest.

Diet

The lovely fairywren is insectivorous and feeds on several types of insects, including caterpillars.
