Striated Grassbird

Overview

The striated grassbird (Megalurus palustris) is an Old World warbler species and the only current member of the genus Megalurus. It is classified as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its extremely large range and stable population trends.

Identification

• Noisy and conspicuous bird often seen sitting exposed on tops of grasses, bushes, and telephone wires.
• Features a streaked crown and streaked upper breast.

Habitat

Found across a wide range in Asia, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Did you know?

Following a 2018 molecular phylogenetic study, the striated grassbird is now the only species left in its genus after other species were reclassified into Poodytes and Cincloramphus.
