Lesser Melampitta

Overview

The lesser melampitta is a medium-sized enigmatic terrestrial songbird found in the mountain forests of New Guinea. It is the only species in the genus Melampitta and is classified within the family Melampittidae.

Identification

• Approximately 18 cm long with all-black plumage.
• Distinctive long legs and short tail.
• Sexes are similar in appearance but differ by iris color: males have crimson red irises, while females have dark brown irises.

Habitat

This species inhabits mountain forests throughout New Guinea. It is widespread and common within its habitat range.

Diet

The diet consists mainly of insects.
