Overview

The grey tit (Melaniparus afer) is a species of bird in the tit family, Paridae. It is currently listed as a species of Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

Found in Lesotho and South Africa, its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation. Two subspecies are recognised: M. a. arens in south South Africa and Lesotho, and M. a. afer in Namibia and west South Africa.

The genus name Melaniparus was introduced by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850, combining the Ancient Greek for 'black' with Linnaeus's genus Parus.
