Blue-capped Motmot

Overview

The blue-capped motmot (Momotus coeruliceps), also known as the blue-crowned motmot, is a colourful near-passerine bird found in the forests and woodlands of eastern Mexico. It is the only species in its former complex characterised by a central blue crown.

Identification

• Body length ranges from 38 to 43 cm.
• Distinctive plumage features include a blue central crown and a black eyemask.
• Produces a call described as a low, owl-like ooo-doot.

Habitat

This species inhabits forests and woodlands in eastern Mexico. Despite its size, it can be difficult to see in its dense forest habitat as it often sits still.

Diet

The blue-capped motmot feeds on small prey such as insects and lizards, and regularly consumes fruit as well.

Did you know?

Like most members of the order Coraciiformes, this species nests in tunnels dug into banks, where it lays approximately three or four white eggs.
