Overview

The Japanese wagtail (Motacilla grandis) is a species of bird in the pipit and wagtail family, native to Japan and Korea. It is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, indicating a stable population.

Identification

• Approximately 20 cm in length with white underparts and black upperparts, throats, and backs.
• Distinctive white supercilia contrasting with the black head markings.
• Black beak and dark grey legs and feet.
• Juveniles exhibit greier plumage compared to the stark black-and-white of adults.

Habitat

Native to Japan and Korea, with vagrant records in Taiwan, eastern China, and far-eastern Russia. It inhabits inland wetlands, arable land, and urban areas.

Diet

The Japanese wagtail feeds on insects.
