Asian Brown Flycatcher

Overview

The Asian brown flycatcher (Muscicapa dauurica) is a small passerine bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is an insectivorous, migratory species that breeds in Japan, eastern Siberia, and the Himalayas.

Identification

• 13 cm (5.1 in) long including the cocked tail, relatively longer-tailed than the spotted flycatcher.
• Adults have grey-brown upperparts and whitish underparts with brown-tinged flanks.
• Juveniles feature scaly brown upperparts, head, and breast.
• The dark bill is relatively large and broad-based.

Habitat

This species is commonly found in open woodland and cultivated areas. Its range extends across breeding grounds in Japan, eastern Siberia, and the Himalayas, with wintering grounds in tropical southern Asia from southern India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia.
