Mountain Chat

Overview

The mountain chat, also known as the mountain wheatear (Myrmecocichla monticola), is a small insectivorous passerine bird endemic to southwestern Africa. This non-migratory species is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• 18–20 cm in length with black legs and a pointed black bill.
• Distinctive tail pattern featuring a white rump and white outer tail feathers, which are consistent in all individuals.
• Males display variable plumage ranging from pale grey to almost black, often with a white shoulder patch, while females are entirely dark brown apart from the white rump and tail.
• Song consists of a clear melodic whistle interspersed with harsh chatters.

Habitat

The mountain chat is resident in mountainous and rocky habitats across Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and the southernmost part of Angola.

Diet

This bird feeds on insects and berries.

Despite being monogamous, this species nests on the ground amongst rocks and lays between two and four white eggs.
