Sulphur-bellied Tyrant-Manakin

Overview

The sulphur-bellied tyrant-manakin (Neopelma sulphureiventer) is a monotypic bird species in the family Pipridae. It is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, although its population is believed to be decreasing.

Identification

• Measures 13 to 13.5 cm (5.1 to 5.3 in) in length and weighs 14 to 19.4 g.
• Features dull olive-green upperparts, a partially hidden pale sulphur-yellow stripe on the crown, and a pale sulphur-yellow lower breast and belly.
• Possesses a longish, brownish bill and grayish legs and feet.
• Vocalisations include a squeaky "dueek" or "duet" in short series, and a scratchy series of "djurt" or "djurit" notes.

Habitat

Found in the far western Amazon Basin, with a contiguous range spanning Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia. It primarily inhabits humid evergreen forest, especially along rivers with large thickets of bamboo, though a separate population in Peru also inhabits semi-deciduous scrublands. Elevation varies by location, generally occurring below 700 m in Peru and below 450 m in Brazil.

Diet

Its diet and foraging behaviour have not been formally studied, but it is believed to feed mostly on insects and some fruit.
