Overview

The common newtonia (Newtonia brunneicauda) is a small, short-winged bird in the family Vangidae that is endemic to Madagascar. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

  • Measures 12 cm in length with a weight of 7–14.5 g and features relatively long legs.
  • Displays greyish-brown upperparts, tannish-white underparts, and a slender, short black bill with a yellow lining.
  • Possesses golden-yellow eyes, while juveniles exhibit darker irises and rufous-brown tips on the greater wing coverts.

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical and tropical dry forests as well as moist lowland forests throughout Madagascar. It is found from sea level up to an elevation of 2,300 m, mostly restricted to native forest and wooded habitats.

Diet

The common newtonia is insectivorous.
