Australian Boobook

Overview

The Australian boobook (Ninox boobook) is the smallest owl species on the Australian mainland, native to the continent, southern New Guinea, Timor, and the Sunda Islands. It is a primarily nocturnal bird that is generally assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its large range and stable population.

Identification

• Measures 27 to 36 cm in length with a compact silhouette, short rounded wings, and a short tail.
• Features predominantly dark brown plumage with prominent pale spots, a white supercilium (eyebrow), and a pale facial disk lacking ear tufts.
• Possesses grey-green or yellow-green eyes, a black bill with a pale blue-grey base, and feet that are greyish to pinkish brown.
• Recognised by its characteristic two-tone 'boo-book' hoot, which can be heard up to 1 km away, with the second note generally lower in pitch than the first.

Habitat

Found across mainland Australia, southern New Guinea, Timor, and surrounding islands in Indonesia, inhabiting a wide range of environments from forest and open woodland to scrubland and semi-desert areas. In drier regions, the species is generally found along watercourses, while in Australia it primarily resides in eucalypt forests. It has successfully adapted to landscapes altered by human activity, including farmland and suburban areas, provided scattered trees are present.

Diet

The Australian boobook feeds on insects and small vertebrates, hunting by pouncing on prey from tree perches. It maintains and defends a territory during the breeding season, which takes place from late winter to early summer, using tree hollows as nesting sites.

The common name 'boobook' is derived from the bird's distinctive two-tone call, a feature that early settlers in New South Wales found reminiscent of the common cuckoo, leading them to mistakenly refer to the bird as the 'cuckoo owl' due to the belief that everything was reversed in the colony compared to England.
