Overview

The cinnabar boobook (Ninox ios), also known as the cinnabar hawk-owl, is a small nocturnal raptor endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This forest-dwelling species inhabits mid-altitudes between 1,100 and 1,700 m within the middle or upper canopy. It is known from locations in northern and central Sulawesi, including Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, Gunung Ambag Nature Reserve, and Lore Lindu National Park.

Diet

As an insectivore, the cinnabar boobook catches insects in flight. It is capable of hovering for several seconds during foraging.

The species was described as new to science in 1999 based on a single specimen collected in 1985, with its scientific name derived from the Greek word ios, meaning 'rust,' referring to its plumage colour.
