The Papuan boobook (Ninox theomacha), also known as the jungle boobook or jungle hawk owl, is a medium-sized, dark-coloured owl native to New Guinea. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

  • Medium-sized, dark-coloured owl with mainly dark gray wings.
  • Features a dark gray-brown facial disk with lighter coloured eyebrows.
  • Possesses sooty or chocolate underparts.

Habitat

Native to New Guinea, this species lives mainly in lowland, montane, and submontane forests. It is typically found on the edges of these forests.
