Spotted Nothura

Overview

The spotted nothura (Nothura maculosa) is a species of tinamou native to South America. It is a small, ground-dwelling bird found in grassy habitats across eastern and southern Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Argentina.

Identification

• Approximately 24 to 25.5 cm in length with a black crown streaked with buff and a white throat.
• Upper parts are brown with streaked buff; underparts are buff with black and brown streaking on the breast and barring to the flanks.
• Legs are dull yellowish-grey or brown.
• Call consists of a series of brief, high-pitched notes.

Habitat

Lives in dry savanna habitats up to 2,300 m in elevation, as well as temperate grasslands and pasture land. It is distributed across eastern and southern Brazil (excluding the Mata Atlântica and coastal planalto uplands), Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.

Diet

Feeds on plants, typically seeds, and animal matter. In Argentina, the species appears to consume more animal matter than in other parts of its range.

The female can produce five to six broods per year, allowing the species to maintain its population despite being avidly hunted. Its eggs feature a spectacular glossy porcelain-like shell in a rich maroon or chocolate brown colour.
