Clark's Nutcracker

Overview

Clark's nutcracker, also known as Clark's crow, is a passerine bird in the family Corvidae native to the mountains of western North America. The species is an omnivore that subsists mainly on pine nuts, displaying remarkable memory skills to bury and later retrieve seeds.

Identification

• Body is roughly the size of a jay, with gray plumage covering the head, back, belly, and ventrum.
• Black wings feature white tips on the secondary feathers, and the tail shows central black feathers bordered by white on either side.
• Possesses a long, black, pointed bill specialised for removing the scales of pine cones.
• Produces variable calls phonetically described as "kraak" or "kraa", along with clicking or crackling sounds.

Habitat

Found in conifer forests across the mountains of western North America, ranging from British Columbia and western Alberta in the north to Baja California and central New Mexico in the south, with a small isolated population in Nuevo León, Mexico. The species typically inhabits altitudes between 900 and 3,900 m, moving seasonally between higher elevations in summer and lower ones in winter, though some populations remain year-round at high elevations if sufficient food caches are available.

Diet

Primarily consumes the seeds of pines, especially whitebark and limber pine, and stores them in the ground for later consumption using a sublingual pouch that can hold 50–150 seeds. As opportunistic feeders, they also consume insects, rodents, eggs, amphibians, carrion, and occasionally unattended human food, earning them the nickname "camp robbers".
