Black-headed Oriole

Overview

The black-headed oriole (Oriolus larvatus) is a species of bird in the family Oriolidae found throughout Africa. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Bright yellow body with a contrasting black head.
• Flesh-coloured beak.
• Liquid-sounding warble accompanied by imitations and whistles.

Habitat

It breeds across much of sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from South Sudan and Ethiopia in the north to South Africa in the south. The bird inhabits dry tropical forests, especially acacia and broad-leaved woodlands, as well as dense shrubland areas.

Diet

The black-headed oriole forages in the canopy, feeding on small fruit and large insects. Young birds are fed mostly with caterpillars.
