Overview

The Philippine oriole, also known as the grey-throated oriole, is a bird species in the family Oriolidae. It is endemic to the Philippines, found on Mindanao and most of the Visayan Islands, and is currently assessed as a species of Least Concern.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, occupying both primary and secondary forest up to 1,200 metres above sea level. It is distributed across Mindanao and the Visayan Islands, with several subspecies ranging from Samar and Leyte to the Sulu Archipelago.

Diet

Although its diet has not been formally recorded, it is presumed to feed on insects, fruits, nectar, and berries. It is observed occurring singly, in small groups, or in mixed-species flocks with other medium-sized birds such as the Bar-bellied cuckooshrike and Black-bibbed cicadabird.

Did you know?

While the species is generally fairly common, the Cebu race (O. s. assimilis) is considered extinct, having not been seen since 1906. Currently, the remaining populations continue to be trapped for the pet trade despite living within designated protected areas.
