Rufous-fronted Tailorbird

Overview

The rufous-fronted tailorbird (Orthotomus frontalis) is a bird species native to the southern and eastern Philippines. It is a member of the family Cisticolidae, having been formerly classified within the Old World warbler assemblage.

Identification

• A subspecies known as mearsi, found on Basilan, is distinguished by more extensive chestnut coloration that extends to the crown.
• Two subspecies are recognized, with frontalis found on Mindanao and mearsi on Basilan.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, tropical mangrove forests, and second growth vegetation. It is native to the southern and eastern Philippines, specifically occurring on Mindanao and Basilan, with records from protected areas such as Pasonanca Natural Park, Mount Apo, and Mount Kitanglad.

Diet

The rufous-fronted tailorbird feeds on small invertebrates, typically found within dense undergrowth. It is often observed foraging in pairs in these environments.

Lax enforcement of protection from illegal logging and hunting threatens the species despite its presence in several protected areas. Little is known about its breeding habits, with observations of nests limited to those found in March on Basilan.
