Cyprus Scops Owl

Overview

The Cyprus scops owl (Otus cyprius) is a small owl species endemic to the island of Cyprus. It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Distinguishable from the similar Eurasian scops owl by its consistently darker plumage and the absence of a rufous morph.
• Produces a distinct double-noted song, in contrast to the single-noted song of its close relative.

Habitat

Endemic to Cyprus, this species occupies virtually the entire island, ranging from sea level up to 1,900 metres. It is found in rural areas, woodlands, and forests, with high nest-box occupancy noted near forest edges.

This species is a cavity-nesting owl on an island that lacks woodpeckers, and its primary host trees, Calabrian pines, rarely develop cavities until they are old.
