Overview

The Samoan whistler, also known as the yellow-fronted whistler, is a species of bird in the family Pachycephalidae. It is endemic to Samoa and is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

Identification

  • Resembles the Australian golden whistler but the male has blacker upperparts.
  • Features a yellow or white forehead and a dull black throat that is strongly mottled with yellow or white.
  • Lacks the black chest-band seen in related species.
  • Females resemble duller versions of males but possess a pale grey throat.

Habitat

Found in forest, plantations and gardens throughout its endemic range in Samoa.

Did you know?

The species was originally described in the genus Eopsaltria and has previously been considered a subspecies of the Australian golden whistler.
