Overview

The drab whistler (Pachycephala griseonota) is a species of bird in the family Pachycephalidae, currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It was formally described in 1862 by the English zoologist George Gray.

Habitat

Native to the Maluku Islands, this species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Six subspecies are recognised across various islands within the Moluccas, including the northern and southern Moluccas.

Did you know?

The specific epithet is derived from Medieval Latin for 'grey', yet George Gray originally misidentified the specimen's collection site as Mysol before it was corrected to the larger island of Seram. A 2021 molecular phylogenetic study revealed that the subspecies P. g. johni is closely related to P. g. cinerascens despite being geographically distinct.
