Overview

The white-vented whistler, Pachycephala homeyeri, is a bird species in the family Pachycephalidae that inhabits the southern Philippines and parts of Malaysia. It is assessed as a Least Concern species by the IUCN, although it faces threats from ongoing deforestation.

Habitat

Found in the southern Philippines and islands of eastern Malaysia, this species occupies primary and secondary tropical moist lowland and montane forests up to 2,000 metres above sea level. It resides in multiple protected areas, including the Central Cebu Protected Landscape, Mount Kanlaon, and Northern Negros Natural Park, though deforestation persists despite these protections.

Diet

The bird forages in the forest understory for insects and frequently joins mixed-species flocks containing other small birds such as the Lemon-throated leaf warbler, Visayan fantail, and Flame-templed babbler.

Did you know?

Formerly, some authorities classified the white-vented whistler as a subspecies of the mangrove whistler, while the subspecies P. h. winchelli was originally described as an entirely separate species.
