Black-chinned Whistler

Overview

The black-chinned whistler (Pachycephala mentalis) is a bird species in the family Pachycephalidae endemic to Halmahera and adjacent smaller islands in North Maluku, Indonesia. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Relatively large bird belonging to the golden whistler group.
• Males possess a white throat and an incomplete black chest-band that is distinct only in the centre of the chest and does not connect to the black head.
• Features a small black chin, which is notably absent in populations on the Obi Islands.

Habitat

This species is endemic to Halmahera and adjacent smaller islands in North Maluku, Indonesia. It is distributed across specific islands including Tidore, Ternate, Bacan, Halmahera, Morotai, and the Obi Islands (Obi and Bisa).
