Overview

The yellow-bellied whistler, also known as the Philippine whistler, is a species of bird in the family Pachycephalidae that is endemic to the Philippines. It is currently assessed as a Least Concern species by the IUCN, despite ongoing deforestation in its range.

Habitat

This species inhabits primary and secondary tropical moist lowland forests as well as the lower reaches of tropical moist montane forests, up to 1,220 metres above sea level. Its range encompasses several islands in the Philippines, including Luzon, Catanduanes, Calayan, Camiguin Norte, Siquijor, Bohol, Basilan, and areas in the east-central and southern regions.

Diet

The bird forages for insects in the understory and often joins mixed-species flocks that include species such as the Blue-headed fantail, Golden-crowned babbler, and Turquoise flycatcher.

Did you know?

Adults display enlarged gonads from January to May, a period coinciding with nestlings appearing in April and nests containing eggs in May.
