Overview

The yellow-billed cardinal (Paroaria capitata) is a bird species in the tanager family, Thraupidae, that is not very closely related to cardinals proper. It is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

  • It lacks a crest, distinguishing it from the red-crested cardinal, with which it is easily confused.

Habitat

This species occurs in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and northern Argentina, and has been introduced to the island of Hawaiʻi. It breeds in moist shrubland.
