Chilean Pigeon

Overview

The Chilean pigeon (Patagioenas araucana) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae. It is currently assessed as being of Least Concern by the IUCN, although habitat reduction remains a concern.

Identification

• Measures 35 to 37 cm in length and weighs between 220 to 340 g.
• Adult males are mostly reddish purple with an iridescent green nape and a narrow white line across the top.
• Features a broad black band across the middle of the gray tail, and an orange eye surrounded by a narrow pink or yellow ring and bare purple skin.
• Vocalises with a series of deep hoos, described as "hooo-HOOOO hooo-HOOOO...".

Habitat

Found in Chile from the Coquimbo Region to the Aysén Region, and in adjoining parts of Argentina. It primarily inhabits southern temperate forests with an affinity for Araucaria and Nothofagus, as well as drier forests in the north and open habitats near forests.

Diet

Mostly forages in trees for fruit, but also feeds on seeds in open areas.
