Dusky Pigeon

Overview

The dusky pigeon (Patagioenas goodsoni) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae found in Colombia and Ecuador. Although it has a restricted range, it is considered common locally within its distribution and is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Identification

• Approximately 24 cm long, with a head, throat, and breast that are gray or purplish gray.
• Nape is gray glossed with purple, while shoulders, back, and rump are olive brown or dark purplish brown.
• Wings and tail are bronzy gray, sometimes glossed with purple.
• Eyes can be any of several shades of red.

Habitat

This species inhabits the Chocó Biogeographic Region, ranging from Colombia near the Panamanian border south to the Río Palenque in northwestern Ecuador. It lives in rainforests, primarily in lowlands but reaching elevations as high as 1,500 m.

Despite its restricted range, the dusky pigeon's life history is almost unknown, and while it is currently common, deforestation may prove to be a serious threat.
