Overview

The Ryukyu minivet (Pericrocotus tegimae) is a bird species in the family Campephagidae, formerly considered a subspecies of the ashy minivet. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Habitat

Originating in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, the species has expanded its range to southern Kyushu, Shikoku, and western Honshu, with a recent record on Jeju in South Korea. It inhabits evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, as well as human-modified areas such as cedar plantations and gardens, ranging from sea level to 1,700 m.

The species is believed to have expanded its range due to declines in the related ashy minivet. Its specific name honours the Japanese naturalist Seiichi Tegima.
