Overview

The white-eared brown dove (Phapitreron leucotis) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae that is endemic to the Philippines. It is found across most of the country, with the exception of Palawan, Sulu, and Batanes.

Habitat

This species inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane primary and secondary forests, reaching altitudes of up to 2,300 metres above sea level. Its range is restricted to the Philippine archipelago, excluding the islands of Palawan, Sulu, and Batanes.

Diet

The diet consists of seeds and fruits. The bird is usually seen alone or in pairs, but may congregate in fruiting trees, while its breeding season is believed to occur from March to June.

Did you know?

Despite being heavily trapped for the pet trade and hunted for its meat, the species remains locally common. It is illegal to hunt, capture, or possess white-eared brown doves under Philippine Law RA 9147.
