Speckle-breasted Wren

Overview

The Pheugopedius sclateri, or speckle-breasted wren, is a small bird species belonging to the family Troglodytidae. It is distributed across parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Identification

• Length varies by subspecies, ranging from 13 cm to 15.5 cm, with weights around 10 to 20 g.
• Features a reddish brown or uniform brown crown and back, with tails bearing alternating gray and dull black or broad dark bars.
• Underparts display fine black and white bars or heavy black speckling on the breast, contrasting with white faces and narrow white supercilia.
• Songs consist of a series of fast, repeated phrases, accompanied by a musical rising trill.

Habitat

Found in the drainage of the Marañon River, the western slopes of the Andes, and from Ecuador's Manabí Province into Peru's Piura Department. Subspecies occupy different microhabitats, including the undergrowth of dry forests, thick understory of forest borders and open woodlands, and edges of deciduous semi-humid woodland at elevations up to 2,000 m.

Diet

Insects form the basis of its diet, as the species is known to be insectivorous. Foraging typically occurs in the understory, sometimes higher in the canopy, and birds are often seen in pairs or joining mixed-species foraging flocks.

The breeding season for the P. s. paucimaculatus subspecies spans April to September, during which an enclosed ground nest made of sticks, vines, leaves, and lichen was observed to hold four eggs.
