Trumpet Manucode

Overview

The trumpet manucode (Phonygammus keraudrenii) is a species of bird in the family Paradisaeidae, widely distributed across New Guinea and adjacent regions. It is named for its powerful and loud trumpeting calls and is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Approximately 31 cm long with iridescent blackish plumage glossed in blue, green, and purple.
• Features elongated horn-like head tufts and loose neck feathers.
• Possesses a red iris, blackish bill and legs, and a long coiled trachea.
• Females resemble males but are smaller and duller in color.

Habitat

This species inhabits lowland rainforests throughout New Guinea, northern Cape York Peninsula, the Aru Islands, and the D'Entrecasteaux Islands. It is widespread and common within this large range, though certain subspecies are geographically distinct.

Diet

The diet consists mainly of fruits and arthropods.
