Yellow-throated Tinkerbird

Overview

The yellow-throated tinkerbird (Pogoniulus subsulphureus) is a small, sedentary species of African barbet. It belongs to the Lybiidae family and is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Small in size with a yellow throat and black plumage.
• The westernmost subspecies, P. s. chrysopygus, exhibits the deepest yellow and starkest black colouration.
• Coastal populations and those in louder environments produce higher-pitched vocalisations.

Habitat

Found throughout the lowland intra-tropical rainforest of Sub-Saharan Africa, this species inhabits primary or established secondary forests. Its range spans from Sierra Leone and southeastern Guinea eastward through Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda, with a separate population limited to Bioko Island.

Diet

These birds typically forage in the higher canopy of their forest habitats.
