Red-bellied Parrot

Overview

The red-bellied parrot (Poicephalus rufiventris) is a small African parrot belonging to the genus Poicephalus. It is a species characterised by being mostly greenish and grey, with significant sexual dimorphism regarding the colour of the belly. The species is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• A small parrot approximately 23 cm long with predominantly greenish lower surfaces and grey upper surfaces.
• Sexually dimorphic plumage where males display a bright orange lower chest and abdomen, while females have greenish lower areas.
• Adults possess red irises, dark grey beaks, and green feathers covering the upper portions of the legs.

Diet

The bird feeds on seeds, fruit kernels, flowers, and nectar, while periodically consuming leaves, bark, and juice from hard fruits.

Although the name 'red-bellied parrot' suggests the presence of red colouring, the bird is actually orange; the term 'red' was used historically because the word for orange had not yet entered the English language when the animal was named.
