Overview
The blue-chested hummingbird, Polyerata amabilis, is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It was formerly placed in the genus Amazilia but was moved to the resurrected genus Polyerata in 2014 to ensure the classification reflects monophyletic lineages.
Habitat
This species is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Panama. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, as well as heavily degraded former forest.
Diet
The bird feeds by trap-lining and defends feeding territories, particularly in nectar-poor habitats. It consumes nectar and small insects gleaned from foliage, with foraging often occurring on the borders of forests in areas of scattered flowers.
