Habitat

This species is found ranging from the Himalayas to north-western Vietnam. Its natural habitat consists of subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

The bird was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Xiphirhynchus but was moved to Pomatorhinus following a 2009 molecular phylogenetic study that showed it nested within a clade with other members of that genus.
