Little Grassbird

Overview

The little grassbird (Poodytes gramineus) is a species of Old World warbler found in Australia and West Papua, Indonesia. This inconspicuous bird is characterised by its dull colouration and tendency to live a nomadic lifestyle without regular migration patterns.

Identification

• An olive-brown or brown-grey bird measuring 13 to 15 cm with a pale eyebrow and dark grey streaks on the throat, crown, and cheeks.
• Upper body is brown-grey and streaked dark grey, while the lighter grey underparts are also streaky.
• Wing feathers are dark with white edges.
• Voice is described as a plaintive three-noted monotone, 'tee-ti-teee,' or a sequence of 2-3 plaintive piping whistles, 'p-pee-pee,' repeated incessantly.

Habitat

Found across Eastern and Southern Australia, inland to Central and South-Western Australia, as well as in West Papua, Indonesia. It inhabits dense wetland vegetation including sedges, reeds, rank grass, and low shrubs such as lignum, saltmarsh, and mangroves, moving into temporary wetlands after rains.

Diet

The bird feeds on insects and other small arthropods, typically foraging within the dense cover of grasses and swamp vegetation.
