Overview
The grey-headed swamphen is a large wetland bird that was formerly considered a subspecies of the purple swamphen but was elevated to full species status in 2015. It is classified as one of six full species within the purple swamphen superspecies complex.
Identification
- Greyish-blue to greyish-purple body with a pale grey head
- Stout red bill and red legs
- Greenish wings
- Approximately 43 cm in length
Habitat
The species occurs in marshes and jheels. Its range extends from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent to southern China and northern Thailand.
